Documents Checklist for Each Criminal Trial Stage
A criminal case dies slowly in drawers — missing seizure memo, lost bail order, chargesheet copy without witness list. Organising papers by trial stage helps you answer counsel’s questions in minutes instead of panic-searching the night before a date. This checklist maps documents to each of the thirteen stages under BNSS procedure (and legacy CrPC papers still valid in pending matters).

How to folder the file
Use thirteen dividers or labelled envelopes. Write the stage number on the tab. Only move a document forward when the court order confirms the next stage — do not pre-sort hopeful papers into “acquittal.”

Keep every bail, remand, and surety document in a separate clip even if the stage moves. Compliance mistakes revoke bail regardless of strong trial papers.
Certified vs photocopy
Use certified copies for filing and appeal. Photocopies suffice for family diary until counsel requests originals. Mark each page with source date.
