Criminal Trial Stage Calendar Template

Criminal Trial Stage Calendar

Court dates arrive in clusters — two hearings in one week, then silence for a month. A stage calendar turns that noise into a readable month view: which of the thirteen stages you were in on each date, what the order said, and what must happen before the next listing. Use this template beside the parent stage finder for weekly actions.

Why a calendar beats a loose diary

Cause lists show the future one day at a time. Orders explain the past one hearing at a time. A calendar forces you to see whether your case is stuck inside one stage too long — common between charge and prosecution evidence, or during repeated witness dates.

Master month grid

Copy into a notebook, spreadsheet, or wall chart. One row per hearing date.

CRIMINAL TRIAL STAGE CALENDAR — MONTH: __________ YEAR: ______

Weekly strip (repeat every Sunday)

  WEEK OF: __________
  Current primary stage: ___
Next court date: __________ Purpose: _________________________
  Bail / surety due: __________
  Documents to carry: ___________________________________________
One task before next date: ____________________________________
  Counsel meeting needed? Y / N

Colour or symbol coding (optional)

If using a spreadsheet:

  • E = evidence block (Stages 8–10)
  • G = gate block (Stages 4–7)
  • L = liberty event (bail/remand — note stage beside it)
  • ! = order missing — chase certified copy

Stage duration tracker

At month end, count how many hearing rows fell in each stage number:

Month review — hearings per stage
  Stage 1: ___ Stage 2: ___ Stage 3: ___ Stage 4: ___
  Stage 5: ___ Stage 6: ___ Stage 7: ___ Stage 8: ___
  Stage 9: ___ Stage 10: ___ Stage 11: ___ Stage 12: ___
  Stage 13: ___
Longest stall: Stage ___ from date ______ to ______

Share the stall line with counsel — it turns feelings into record.

BNSS labelling column

Add a narrow column “Law cited” for BNSS / CrPC / BNS references on orders. Families migrating from old notes stay aligned with counsel without relabelling the whole file.

Parallel calendars to avoid

Do not merge unrelated matters on one calendar (bail in one case, trial in another). One calendar per case number.

Integration with parent finder

Each Sunday:

  1. Enter the week’s hearing on the grid.
  2. Open parent finder → tap stage number → copy one action into weekly strip.
  3. Mark done or pending.

Long gaps without hearings

If no row for thirty days, add a gap row:

Gap note: No listing from ___ to ___ | Reason from counsel/IO: _______

Gaps matter for lawful delay conversations.

This-week checklist

  • Draw month grid for current and next month.
  • Backfill last five hearings from daily orders.
  • Fill weekly strip for coming seven days.
  • Mark primary stage today using parent finder.
  • Note bail and surety dates on same calendar.
  • Photograph cause list for every new date.
  • Run month-end stage count if month is closing.

FAQs

One calendar for co-accused?

Separate calendars if case numbers or stages diverge; shared only if identical orders.

Digital or paper?

Either works; consistency matters. Backup photos to cloud.

Does filling calendar speed up court?

No — it improves your preparation and counsel meetings.

What if purpose on board differs from order?

Order prevails; note discrepancy in Order summary column.
